How to Clean Old Carpets Using Commonly-Used Kitchen Items

08/23/2013 Back To Blog

According to most carpet cleaners, no matter how tidy or shiny your home's rugs look on the outside, they could already be very dingy or filthy on the inside.  While you could buy conventional chemical-based couch cleaning products in the grocery or hardware, these are often a bit expensive. Why not clean your prized home furnishings using the commonly-used items or ingredients that are found in your kitchen? These ingredients or items make for effective home carpet cleaning solutions.  Let's discuss a few of these amazing rug cleaners.

Vinegar and Water

Vinegar is perhaps one of the best cleaning solutions that can be found at home. This has been used for centuries in cleaning floors, curtains, pillows and even carpets. To create an inexpensive vinegar couch cleaning mixture, mix equal parts of cold water and vinegar, and try adding a pinch of salt and lemon juice. But before applying this mixture on rug stains, pre-test it first on the rug's corners and hidden spots, to see if it does not remove the rug's color or taint fabric quality.

Baking Soda

Baking soda is also commonly-found in most kitchens because it's a popular detergent and rug or sofa cleaning agent. Sprinkle a considerable amount of baking soda into the rug's stained or affected areas, and let it stay there for at least an hour, before scraping it away manually or lifting it off using a vacuum cleaner.

When performing carpet stain removal using a standard vacuum cleaner, always make sure you strictly follow the machine manufacturer's guidelines.  Also make sure to run the vacuum over the rug once using warm water to rinse any cleaning detergent residue. As soon as the rug dries, vacuum it all over again to effectively remove any remaining cleaning solution or soap residue.
